Journalist, Columnist, Author

Joe Hight is a journalist, writer and educator who has spent his life in the pursuit of ways and stories to help improve people’s lives.


He helped found the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at Columbia University, New York City, and was editor of The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colorado, when the newspaper brought home a  Pulitzer Prize in 2014.


The endowed chair of journalism ethics at the University of Central Oklahoma and director of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame, he continues to advocate for changes in both the country’s healthcare system and law enforcement agencies with regard to how they interact with people with mental illness in hopes of preventing any other family from ever having to go through what his did in the aftermath of the death of his brother Paul.


Hight and his family own the Best of Books, an independent bookstore, in Edmond, Oklahoma that benefits from the community-minded spirit of his wife, Nan. The Hights make their home in Edmond.


Unnecessary Sorrow is his first book.
